Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of true suffering and to protest against true suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of a soulless state. It is the opium of the people.
The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for one's true happiness. To call them to give up to the illusions of one's state is to call them to give up to a state that wants illusions.
The judgement of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the judgement of this vale of tears of which religion is the halo
The judgement has pulled the imaginary flowers in the chain not because one will continue to take the chain without the fantasy or the consolation, but so that he will throw away the chain and pluck the living flower.
